A Part of You (Fox)

A Part of You (Fox) - Original mixed media painting by Kirstie Page

It's a funny thing, I always knew logically that foxes lived in my local area (Brisbane, Australia). But knowing it logically and seeing one in real life for the first time are two different things.  When I saw a fox a little while ago, I was quite taken with it and wanted to explore through my art.

It's an animal with many complex associations and I must confess I'm not truly sure how I feel about it. When I'm lost like this, I'll often be guided by the words of others. I struggled to find words that resonated with me until I discovered this quote. I knew in that moment I'd found the focus for the painting:

"I am looking for friends. What does that mean - tame?" "It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. "It means to establish ties." "To establish ties?" "Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world."

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I thought about how it can quite often seem almost inconsequential when two beings first meet - at that initial point we are nothing more than two of billions in the world. But how incredible is it that over time those two very same individuals can become so important to each other that they share mutual love and devotion. I wish we would think about and act on this more often. I can't help but think the world would be a kinder, more accepting place.

In that context I chose to feature my fox surrounded primarily by ivy. Symbolically, ivy represents friendship, devotion and fidelity. Eucalyptus leaves feature, representing the warding off of negativity, strength and abundance. The star of bethlehem flower, amongst other things, stands for truth, hope and humility. Finally, a butterfly features, represents transformation and freedom. I feel all these qualities about the people (and even my lovely pet) who I am most closely connected to in the world.

I'll finish with saying, here's to friendship in all its many glorious forms. And may you always remember that you are unique in all the world. I see you.
