Little Bunny
This painting was inspired by a trip to Canberra which was my childhood hometown. As I drove down familiar roads, I couldn’t help but notice the many rabbits grazing by the side of the road. They were everywhere!
Seeing them brought back a very vivid memory of myself reading Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter when I was a little girl with my blond hair with jagged, home-cut fringe and rosy cheeks. Gosh I loved the mischief that little rabbit got up to in Mr McGregor’s garden. I must have been no more than 5 or 6, but I can still recall thinking how wonderful it would be if Peter Rabbit really existed.
When I got back to Brisbane I just knew I needed to paint a rabbit. I wanted to honour not only my childhood town and the people so special to me who still live there, but to acknowledge that little part of me that determinedly still believes that whimsy and magic exists to this day. I live in hope that there will always be that part of me on the lookout for velvety ears and a cotton puff tail in a little blue jacket.
