Secret Story: Rise Above It All

‘Rise Above it All’ (Rainbow Bee Eater). Mixed media by Kirstie Page

I’ve always loved the Rainbow bee-eater, they’re one of nature’s wonders; so it seemed fitting to paint one. I was fascinated to discover these little birds are highly symbolic, with multiple dreaming stories associated with them.

One constant message across all the stories was that seeing one is a reminder that you are courageous and tenacious. This, I decided, would be a perfect theme to explore throughout this artwork.

I included circles (representing enlightenment and protection) in a soft, calm, soothing shade of blue. For it’s one thing to confront difficult times, but to be calm as well through it all; to bend, not break, is something I aspire to achieve.

The insects represent endurance, transformation, change and hope. Bees represent personal power, community and brightness.

Finally, eucalyptus leaves feature; the most holy of plants for the traditional owners of our land. They have a purifying effect and dispel evil spirits. My wish for you is you feel a sense of comfort as you gaze upon this work if you need it today.
