Spotlight in my Garden

‘Spotlight in my Garden’ Original mixed media painting of a Southern Bookbock Owl by Kirstie Page

When I was a little girl, my brothers and friends and I used to love to play hide and seek in my parents’ back garden.

The most exciting time to play the game however was at night when hide and seek transformed into the utterly spine-tingly, thrilling adventure called “Spotlight”.

It was super cool to be the seeker when we played Spotlight because you were the person who got to hold a torch and switch it on, yelling “Spotlight!” at the top of your lungs every time you found someone hiding.

The funny thing is, I was really scared of the dark. Night time petrified me. So much so I often needed to sleep with a light on my fear was so extreme.

Yet there was something so magical and thrilling about Spotlight which made me brave enough to forget my fear for just a little while. While I was hiding OR seeking.

My little southern boobock owl represents good luck. Eucalyptus flowers ward off negative energy and the stars represent to me not only the wonder and beauty of the night time sky, but also the mystery of the universe. All things I felt playing the game.

I find it fascinating to reflect back now and realise this must have been one of my first life-lessons in regard to the true power of mindset to positively change how we feel, act and react out in the world.

I’m going to remember this little owl and scene in the future whenever I start to experience feelings of fear or doubt.

Wonder and beauty persists regardless of the darkness.💙
