Your Moment to Shine

‘Your Moment to Shine’ Original mixed media painting of an Australian fairy wren by Kirstie Page

After the big announcement last week that the fairy wren was announced as Guardian Australia’s bird of the year, it became immediately apparent that I needed to paint one. I mean, this bird is now a superstar, how could I not?

I had a lot of fun creating this light-hearted painting. It really helped to blow away the cobwebs. The fairy wren was in many ways the perfect choice to win the award - they are little birds that loving showing off. I consider them to definitely be an influencer bird and so I wanted to highlight this through the use of colour and choice of pattern and flowers used.

The bright golden/tangerine background is like a spotlight on the bird - bright and a colour, full of energy. Stylised gum blossoms act as spotlights and imaginary microphones.

They were a lovely choice to use symbolically as well. They are said to dispel negative energy. Can you feel it too?

Finally, I chose a darkened background to create the birdie illusion of it being on stage. After all, in the eyes of the fairy wren, all the world is a stage.  I so hope this artwork made you smile. Sometimes it’s wonderful to celebrate and enjoy having a moment to shine.
