Secret Story: The Awakening
I adore magpies. Why? Well, it’s because they’re some of the wildest characters around - seamlessly alternating between comedian, nurturer, philosopher and fierce feathered warrior who will show no mercy. All depending on the season (and their mood in a given moment, it must be said…)
Given I like them so much I decided to paint one sitting in a magnificent poinciana tree, which are in bloom all around Brisbane at the moment. They’re quite magnificent.
In terms of symbolism, the magpie is quite a complex animal. As a totem, it means good luck and seeing one indicates you’ll experience great love, joy and a lasting future.
There is a dark side though (just like the feathers): it can also represent trickery and deception. I personally like to think of them as protectors, defending the things that matter the most to them. Importantly, I really liked the fact that they can also representing realising one’s true potential.
The poinciana is a flamboyant tree, which also has a variety of meanings. One that resonated with me in particular was the fact that it is said to enhance certitude and assurance.
For this reason, I decided that my magpie was experiencing an awakening. It’s looking upwards with focus, embracing what is to be a vibrant future (as depicted by the flowers). The swirls behind it are representative of the sacred symbol that represents life’s journey as it unfolds over time…
What do you think of the magpie? Friend or foe? Write to me and tell me, I’d love to know…
